Things To Know Before Scheduling A Facial With Extractions

If you suffer from acne, blackheads, or clogged pores, you may want to schedule a facial that includes extractions. This type of facial has the esthetician use a combination of techniques in order to remove the contents of your clogged pores and blemishes. It can be really helpful in clearing up your skin, not only immediately, but in the weeks following treatment. However, there are a few key things you should know before scheduling a facial with extractions.

It's done in a sterile, safe way

You've probably been told, time and time again, not to pop your pimples. As such, going in for a facial that involves basically having your pimples popped may seem strange at first. However, having an esthetician or dermatologist perform extractions is quite different from popping pimples at home. Your practitioner knows what tools to use to keep the risk of infection and scarring to a minimum. They've been specially trained to perform extractions with as little harm as possible to the skin.

It can take a while

The more blemishes you have, the longer the extractions will take. However, even patients with only a few blemishes are sometimes surprised how long this type of facial takes the first time around. This is partially because your esthetician will seek to extract even from pores that are somewhat clogged, and not just from the most obvious and active blemishes. This approach helps prevent new blemishes from forming in those partially clogged pores. The procedure also takes a while because, before they extract, most estheticians like to steam the face to get the pore contents to soften. They also follow up with some soothing and moisturizing facial steps. Expect this type of facial to take at least an hour, and maybe even up to two!

Your skin might be a little sore

Having extractions performed can be really satisfying. But don't be surprised if your skin is a little sore for a day or two after the facial. This soreness is due, in part, to the pressure your practitioner had to place on your skin in order to extract your pore contents. It may also be from some tiny pinpricks or incisions they had to make in order to extract from larger blemishes. Just stick with a gentle skincare routine, relax, and the pain will be gone before you know it.

A facial with extractions is a good option for anyone with acne or clogged pores. And now you have a better idea of what to expect!
